The president-elect of the Oxford Union has been ousted from office after losing a vote of confidence that came after his disputed social media posts about Charlie Kirk.

The motion against George Abaraonye reached the necessary two-thirds threshold to remove him from office, according to an announcement from the society.

Disputed Comments

The controversy erupted after Mr Abaraonye reportedly shared messages on online platforms that seemed to celebrate the killing of Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot while addressing a university in Utah.

According to reports, one social media message reportedly stated "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an elongated version of the acronym for 'laughing out loud'.

The president-elect is also reported to have posted in a WhatsApp chat with fellow students seeming to express approval of the event.

Election Results

The vote of confidence was conducted over the weekend, with outcomes revealed on Tuesday.

Official notices showed that over twelve hundred votes were cast supporting removal, while 501 were against the motion.

The notice confirmed that the future president was deemed to have stepped down in following the Oxford Union's rules.

Election Controversies

Proceedings were temporarily halted early on the previous day after the returning officer was reportedly subjected to "interference, threats, and inappropriate behavior" from several representatives.

In a statement, the student claimed that the vote tally had been halted because electoral officials believed "no valid outcome could be reached as a result of procedural failures".

His statement unequivocally denied that any person acting for the student had participated in threatening or obstructive conduct.

Ongoing Dispute

The student stated that significant concerns had been referred to the disciplinary committee and that he remained the elected leader.

His statement added that George was "grateful and honored to have the support of well in excess of a majority of university members" who voted to have a "secure voting process and oppose efforts to undermine the electoral process".

Critics have argued that any failure to remove him would "signal to the world that the society has chosen ideology over integrity".

External Responses

On Friday, Mikey McCoy presented an public message to the society on The Charlie Kirk Show podcast.

The message criticized the society of becoming a institution where "presidents of the union publicly celebrate the killing of a ideological rival".

The communication warned that if the student were to keep his position, Kirk's allies would "directly reach out to every U.S. political figure who has ever graced the union's chamber and advise them against future participation".

The Oxford Union had earlier condemned Mr Abaraonye's remarks after the activist's killing and stated that concerns submitted about him had been forwarded for disciplinary proceedings.

The student leader had been one of several students to debate with the activist at the union in spring.
