Substantial Web Outage Affects Dozens Online Platforms and Applications

A widespread online outage has impacted many online platforms and applications worldwide, and users experiencing problems connecting to the web due to difficulties at the cloud computing platform.

The affected services encompass Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, in addition to multiple Amazon-operated operations such as its key e-commerce site and the Ring device manufacturer.

In the UK, Lloyds bank was impacted along with its subsidiaries the bank Halifax and the Scottish bank, while there were additional accounts of problems accessing the HM Revenue and Customs site on that morning. Furthermore across the UK, many Ring device owners turned to networks to complain their doorbells were not working.

Solely in the United Kingdom, reports of disruptions on particular platforms ran into the tens of thousands for each platform.

Officials confirmed that the outage originated in the eastern region of the US at the cloud division, a section that supplies crucial online backbone for many firms, who utilize space on AWS infrastructure. Amazon Web Services is the biggest global cloud computing platform.

Soon after midnight (PDT) in the US (8 in the morning BST), officials reported “elevated failure rates and slowdowns” for Amazon's platforms in a region on the Atlantic seaboard of the America. The ripple effect appeared to affect services worldwide, and the Downdetector site indicating issues with the identical platforms in various regions.

The monitoring service Thousand Eyes, a platform that reports on internet outages, further indicated a rise in issues on Monday morning, including several cases located in the Virginia area, the location of the eastern US data center where officials confirmed the outage started.
