One teenage boy was found dead only a few days after being wrongly accused of taking the cremated remains of a dead infant during a burglary, an inquest has heard.

Tragic Finding

The young boy's parents discovered his remains in his bedroom at his Connah's Quay residence on 19 November 2021.

Untrue Allegations Start

The inquest learned how his mother received a message on November 8th, 2021 via online platforms, from a woman asking if Kai was her offspring. The communication stated: "Tell him thanks for breaking into my flat."

In a statement read to the court, the mother said the woman had been in the news, claiming her infant's remains had been taken in a break-in - a claim which was untrue.

Police Inquiry

An official inquiry from authorities later concluded the supposed break-in victim had "provided false information" and "evidence shows that said property was never taken in the beginning".

News coverage about the alleged stolen remains attracted social media responses, and although Kai was not named in the posts, his parent said individuals "understood it was him".

The "social media content were extremely upsetting", she said.

Emotional Wellbeing Impact

She added that her son had been diagnosed with mild ADHD, and as part of that condition, other peoples' views genuinely mattered to him.

"This must have hurt him deeply," she said, "particularly when this was untrue".

The teenager was arrested at home, but no evidence was found. He was taken to a police station and later released pending further inquiry.

Police said they would be in contact, the inquest learned, but had not reached out to the family by the time of his death.

Withdrawal and Anxiety

His parent said her son "became isolated" after the detention and "repeatedly inquired me whether I had received anything from the police", because his condition meant sometimes "a minute could seem like much longer".

When she talked to him about the supposed burglary, she said her son informed her he had entered the house because the resident who lived there had said he could utilize the bathroom whenever he wanted, but denied taking anything.

Digital Bullying

In a combined testimony between her and her spouse, Mrs Lloyd said her son was being bullied digitally after the accusations.

The inquest learned that one young adult urged the teenager to kill himself.

She had no concerns on the evening before he died, describing how she had heard him "laughing and joking".

She portrayed him as a "compassionate, affectionate" boy, and said her "relatives is completely shattered".

He had been "obviously concealing his concerns", she said, adding that he could not stand to have anyone "think bad of him".

School Response

The hearing received testimony from school staff at Connah's Quay High School.

On 8 November, she "heard some boys talking that Kai had been arrested and that was the initial I learned".

"He informed me... he'd was innocent," she continued.

After the conversation, the educator said she rang the family's parents' landline and provided a voicemail saying she had communicated to Kai about the accusations.

The court learned his family said they did not receive that communication.

Formal Finding

Senior coroner informed the hearing he would wait for documents regarding what enhancements had been made to dealing with suspects with the condition, before determining whether he should make a prevention of future fatalities report.

Providing a descriptive finding, he stated: "Approximately November 8th, 2021, unsubstantiated accusations were made against Kai Benjamin Lloyd, a 14-year-old child.

"Likely untruths were subsequently embellished and exaggerated through the platform of online networks.

"During 11 November, he was questioned by the authorities and after his interview he was released while inquiries continued."

The official determined: "There is no proof that the actions or omissions of any organization caused or added to his death and although it was the result of a self-inflicted act it is impossible to determine his purpose."
