World Health Organization Confronts Major Staff Cuts After US Financial Withdrawal
This international health agency revealed plans to cut its workforce by almost a fourth – amounting to over two thousand jobs – before mid-2026.
Financial Shortfall Prompts Substantial Restructuring
The move follows after the US, previously the organization's biggest donor, pulled out funding previously this year.
The US government was contributing approximately eighteen percent of the organization's total funding, causing a substantial financial gap.
Projected Staff Reductions
Based on organizational projections, the workforce is expected to drop from 9,401 positions in January 2025 to around 7,030 by mid-2026.
This decrease of 2,371 posts includes staff reductions, retirements, and regular departures.
"This year has been one of the toughest in our existence, while we undertook a painful but necessary journey of prioritization and restructuring," stated the agency's leader.
Financial Shortfall Remains
This Switzerland-headquartered organization currently confronts a budget gap of $1.06bn for the 2026-2027 biennium, amounting to almost a quarter of its required budget.
This amount represents an reduction from a prior projected gap of $1.7bn noted in May.
Excluded Funding
These financial calculations exclude an additional $1.1bn in expected contributions from current negotiations with various donors.
The spokesperson for the agency noted that the current unsecured portion of the budget is actually lower than in earlier periods, crediting this to multiple reasons:
- A smaller overall budget
- Initiation of a new donor outreach effort
- Higher in participating countries' mandatory fees
This restructuring process is currently nearing its completion, allowing the agency to move forward with a renewed structure.
