The UK Foreign Office has included an additional eleven further destinations to its official warning roster concerning the dangers of industrial alcohol poisoning from contaminated beverages.

The updated warning covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following evidence showing "a worldwide rise in the frequency of documented incidents" of industrial alcohol poisoning.

Only recently, the government had earlier added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing list, after a number of serious cases including the deadly death of six tourists in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being advised that even tiny quantities of methanol can cause blindness or loss of life within 12–48 hrs.

Exactly what is Methanol and In what way is it Utilized?

Methanol is a harmful industrial alcohol often utilized in coolant, windscreen washer fluid, and paint thinner. This substance is not meant for human consumption.

Although it is naturally produced during the creation of alcoholic drinks, commercial firms bring it down to minimal, harmless amounts for drinking through the purification method.

However in some countries, it is clandestinely blended into spirits to cut costs, and because it is tasteless and smell-free, it is very difficult to detect.

Official Advice for Travelers

Authorities official Hamish Falconer emphasized that every traveler should be aware of the signs of methanol toxicity.

"When you are drinking spirits overseas, stick to trusted places and steer clear of unlicensed drinks or unspecified beverages," the official advised.

"In case something appears suspicious, such as a fatigue that's much more severe than normal or vision problems – seek medical attention right away."

The full register of countries identified as posing a risk of toxic alcohol toxicity currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
