The Latest Mayhem Mounts Update Introduces a Stunningly Wild New Spear to Your World

The seasonal game drop for the block-building phenomenon has touched down — and it brings with it the initial fresh armament added to the game since the mace made its debut. The lance is finally here and it could very well alter your gameplay in Minecraft, particularly when you thrive on pandemonium.

A Weapon Forged for Mounted Mayhem

The Mounts of Mayhem drop also adds several new features and enhancements centered around animal mounts in the game. That focus made the spear the perfect fit for this release, as the creators had long felt it was time for a fresh combat tool.

"We knew initially that we wanted a fresh armament that would provide extended reach, and we envisioned it for fighting from atop a creature," stated a senior product manager. "We tried out a number of concepts, but the spear was the one that both played wonderfully when we tested our prototypes and also was visually fitting for the use case."

If you're asking yourself whether fighting from a saddle means you can charge at your friends on steeds, the answer is a definite affirmative. In fact, there's even an offensive action perfectly suited for it.

"[Jousting on horses is a primary use cases for the spear, and it's so much fun," the developer adds. "The spear has a pair of offensive moves: You have the thrust, where you pierce your enemy. But you also have a powerful lance where you couch your lance and deal increased harm [with] the more pace you have. So [it’s] tailor-made for jousting on horses."

Sky-High Chaos and Underwater Adventures

The unruly pleasure can extend beyond there, though. If you're far enough into the game that you've visited The End, the developers have an truly outlandish idea. "If you are in the end-game, [spears are] perfect for equipping the wings and going out and making some real mayhem," she hints.

In other words: Aerial lance combat is now a reality, and it needs to become an competitive event without delay.

Another major addition in this latest drop is the Nautilus. This sea-dwelling mob, which is based on the seashells players have gathered for years, can be domesticated and ridden for underwater travel. Not only will it carry you through the water faster than swimming, it'll also preserve your oxygen levels, so there's no requirement to return to the surface for fresh air.

The other inclusions are mostly things that are out to get you, as is the nature of Minecraft. Unsurprisingly, there's also a undead nautilus spawning in the water, frequently with a zombie villager on its back. If you manage to take care of the Drowned, though, you can befriend the zombie Nautilus — or the regular one, for that matter — with a puffer fish.

"We've long considered this problem for some time, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it felt like the perfect moment to also introduce something for aquatic environments," the developer explains. "For the Nautilus specifically, we had a few different ideas for underwater mounts that we wanted to try out, but the Nautilus concept art looked impressive, and we have the link to the Nautilus shell that was already in the game."

She also notes that there are actually two distinct kinds of undead nautilus: standard and coral-infested undead mount. "[The variants] give some flavor to what you discover underwater."

Desert Dangers and Long-Awaited Tweaks

Additional features include the Parched, biome-specific skeletons that can endure the sun, which means there's no getting away from them if you find yourself in that region. Sometimes you'll see them on zombified camels, another new mob. These passive, zombified camels have an striking appearance that sees their skeletal frame exposed. The same goes for zombie horses, who have a similar rib-popping design and can sometimes be spawned in the darkness with a spear-carrying undead rider on their back.

The last two things on the drop's list are minor quality-of-life improvements, including some highly requested adjustments to riding horses. Now, you can cross bodies of water while mounted on a horse. Also, netherite horse armor is now craftable at the crafting table, so you can give your horse the ultimate protection it deserves.

A Fittingly Chaotic Finale

In summary, the final game drop of the year is a pretty good one. The spear alone — and the pandemonium it invites — would have felt like a major improvement. Add in the Nautilus, and more things trying to kill you, and Minecraft's definitely getting a bit spicier.

The Mounts of Mayhem content drop is live for Java and Bedrock editions of Minecraft.
